James McClean admits his team-mates were surprised by his refusal to wear a poppy

Wrexham midfielder James McClean has long been a figure of controversy due to his decision not to wear a poppy. He now says his team-mates are initially surprised but remain respectful after he explains his reasons.

The former Republic of Ireland international grew up on the Creggan estate in Derry, home to many victims of the Bloody Sunday tragedy in 1972, when British soldiers killed 13 unarmed civilians. Because of this background, McClean says he cannot support wearing a symbol that represents all conflicts involving the United Kingdom.

“My team-mates are often taken aback, but once I explain where I come from and why, they fully understand,” McClean shared.

Over the years, he has faced abuse and even death threats due to his stance. Despite this, McClean insists that fellow players usually respect his choice after hearing his perspective.

The debate resurfaces every year as Remembrance Day approaches. McClean revealed that he wishes the attention surrounding his decision, which began during his time at Sunderland in 2012, would finally fade away.

“It’s frustrating to constantly justify my beliefs,” he said in an interview with Westlife singer Nicky Byrne.

Recently, McClean also revealed that his wife feared for his safety, worrying that he could be attacked or even shot during a live broadcast because of the hostility directed toward him.
