The Liberals welcomed their newest caucus member, Chris d’Entremont, who suggested that other Conservatives might follow his lead.
On Wednesday, Nova Scotia MP Chris d’Entremont announced he no longer aligned with his former leader Pierre Poilievre’s political views. He crossed the floor shortly after the Liberals tabled their budget, joining the minority Liberal caucus.
“I’m honoured to welcome him as the newest member of our government caucus,” said Prime Minister Mark Carney. “Chris’s decision to join the government caucus at this crucial moment for our country is exceptionally valuable and important.”
The minority Liberal government is only two seats away from a majority, which would ensure their budget passes without relying on opposition support.
Speaking to reporters, d’Entremont explained he had been considering this move for months. He stated,
“Over the last number of months, I wasn’t feeling that I was aligned with the ideals of what the leader of the opposition had been talking about. So, I’ve been sort of relooking at what my career is bringing, and what I can do for my constituency.”
This change reflects his reassessment of his values and commitment to his constituents.
Chris d’Entremont’s shift to the Liberals signals possible further Conservative defections, impacting the balance of power in the minority government.
