Hull KR CEO Explains World Club Challenge Venue Switch

Hull KR CEO Paul Lakin has explained why the upcoming World Club Challenge will take place at the home stadium of their rivals, Hull FC. Despite the rivalry, Lakin emphasized that the main goal was always to host the event in Hull.

Reason for Venue Change

Lakin revealed that Craven Park, Hull KR’s regular ground, was too small to accommodate the expected crowd for this significant match. The decision was thus made to move the game to the MKM Stadium, which is Hull FC’s home ground, ensuring more fans can attend.

Consideration of Other Venues

There were brief discussions about hosting the game at Elland Road. However, once the limitations of Craven Park became clear, moving across the city to MKM Stadium was deemed the best option.

Financial and Fan Demand Factors

Lakin highlighted the financial necessity and high demand from supporters of both teams as crucial reasons behind the switch.

“It was really important for people to try to retain it in the city. It’s a huge rugby league city and it’ll be fantastic for us to keep it in Hull.”
“Financial reasons, supply and demand, it’s the biggest domestic game and you want as many people to experience it as possible. The players we have in our side, they want to play on the biggest stage possible.”
“For financial reasons, it (Craven Park) wasn’t viable because we need to support the Broncos coming over here.”

Looking Ahead

The match will feature two of the best rugby league clubs in the world and is expected to draw significant attention from fans across all teams, making MKM Stadium the ideal location.

Summary: Hull KR’s CEO stresses financial and logistical reasons for hosting the World Club Challenge at Hull FC's MKM Stadium, aiming to maximize fan attendance and maintain the event in Hull.
