Curt Lafferty is set to open Mo Pie’s first physical bakery location in Leawood later this month. It will debut as a pop-up for the holiday season before becoming a permanent spot in spring or summer 2026.
Lafferty’s expertise in pie-making comes from years of experience and education. After attending the American Institute of Baking (part of Kansas State University) in Manhattan, Kansas, he started in sales and eventually worked with Tippin’s Pies, a Kansas-based company. In the early 2000s, he moved from consultant to executive at Tippin’s and spent about two decades there.
After sharpening his baking skills, Lafferty founded his own company, Mo Pie, in 2020. Since then, Mo Pie’s products have been sold at various local businesses, including multiple Price Chopper grocery stores and farmers markets. The brand also ships hundreds of pies weekly across the Midwest.
The new Leawood bakery will open in a few weeks to take Thanksgiving orders, which customers can now place. The pop-up will run through the holiday season, with another scheduled for Christmas orders in December.
Lafferty said,
“If all goes according to plan, then Mo Pie will have two more pop-ups for Valentine’s Day and Easter before opening permanently in the space.”
This move marks a significant growth step for Mo Pie as it transitions from wholesale and markets to a dedicated physical location.
