The Canton of Aargau in Switzerland has launched an online map that displays geothermal energy suitability across the region. This initiative aims to enhance development and encourage investment in geothermal projects.
The map provides a strategic foundation for future energy planning by illustrating different models for geothermal energy application. It supports the efficient and targeted use of geothermal potential within the canton.
"Geothermal energy – especially for shallow heat extraction using ground source heat pumps – already makes a significant contribution to a sustainable and secure energy supply and to decarbonization (target: net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050)."
Recognizing the region’s strong geothermal conditions, the Cantonal Government approved a motion from the Grand Council in March 2022 to create a geothermal register. This register helps identify the potential for geothermal energy in Aargau’s municipalities.
Following this, the Energy Division of the Department of Construction, Transport and Environment collaborated with specialists to conduct a detailed study assessing local geothermal capacities.
The Canton of Aargau introduced a digital geothermal suitability map to attract investments, support clean energy initiatives, and guide sustainable regional energy development.
