GolfMagic visited Machrihanish, a remote but world-class links course that remains surprisingly affordable. Established in 1876 as The Kintyre Golf Club, it evolved into an 18-hole course under Old Tom Morris three years later when additional land was acquired.
The transformation by Old Tom Morris introduced one of golf’s most iconic opening holes, a topic of admiration among players worldwide. Over the years, modifications were made by J.H. Taylor in 1914 and later by Sir Guy Campbell in the 1940s. Despite these updates, the course feels as though it has always belonged to its rugged coastal landscape.
“Specifically designed by the Almighty for playing golf.” — Old Tom Morris
“The only course in Scotland that still seems just as raw and natural as the first time I was there 35 years ago.” — Tom Doak
Reaching Machrihanish can be challenging, stretching nearly 20 miles from the Mull of Kintyre. Notably, a beach nearby served as the backdrop for a Paul McCartney video. The long drive along the scenic A83 offers a serene prelude to one of the top-40 courses in Great Britain and Ireland and a top-20 in Scotland.
Playing these neighboring courses enhances the trip, leaving golfers with a deeper appreciation for the region and the game itself.
Machrihanish Golf Club stands as a rare blend of history, challenge, and natural beauty, where each shot connects timeless design with the unspoiled landscape of coastal Scotland.
