New Leadership Deal for World Zionist Organization
A fresh agreement, still pending finalization, proposes a leadership rotation between Rabbi Doron Perez and the current World Zionist Organization (WZO) head, Yaakov Hagoel.
Collapse of Previous Agreement
The prior deal fell apart Wednesday night after Yair Netanyahu, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s eldest son, was unexpectedly nominated for a prestigious WZO board position.
The move "crossed a red line for many" and led the opposition Yesh Atid party to withdraw support for the agreement.
This announcement disrupted the compromise and plunged the World Zionist Congress into chaos.
Terms of the Emerging Arrangement
In the new proposed deal, Yair Netanyahu will not hold any role within the WZO.
He had been nominated to head the WZO’s Diaspora and Information Department, a position featuring an office, a car, and a salary equivalent to that of a government minister.
At this stage, it remains unclear who will fill this role.
Summary
The new leadership agreement aims to restore stability by excluding Yair Netanyahu and potentially reinstating Yaakov Hagoel as WZO chief.
