Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment Review

Zelda's journey through Hyrule's ancient past delivers the best experience in the Hyrule Warriors series to date. Playing Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment naturally brings to mind the story of Tears of the Kingdom and how Age of Calamity interpreted Breath of the Wild's backstory.

While Zelda games have historically incorporated story elements, I felt recent entries missed the mark despite their potential. I appreciated the behind-the-scenes narrative of Tears of the Kingdom set after Breath of the Wild, yet key aspects left me wanting more. On paper, Age of Imprisonment promised to fulfill those narrative gaps and enrich a story with all the right elements for emotional impact, which earlier installments struggled to deliver.

However, much like Tears of the Kingdom, success depends heavily on execution and the quality of the gameplay experience itself. Fortunately, Age of Imprisonment is a strong Warriors game and became a personal sleeper hit for me this year.

For context, I assume readers have some familiarity with the Dynasty Warriors series if they are interested in Age of Imprisonment.

“It's all well and good then that it's a sleeper hit for my personal game of the year.”

This title not only deepens the lore but also elevates gameplay, making it a standout in the franchise.

Author's Summary

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment successfully bridges narrative gaps from previous Zelda stories, pairing rich lore with satisfying Warriors gameplay to deliver a standout title.
