Actor and comedian Jim Belushi, 71, shared with PEOPLE one of his most treasured memories from the early years of his Hollywood career — a moment that involved his older brother, John Belushi.
During the Song Sung Blue premiere at AFI Fest in Los Angeles on October 26, Jim reflected on the period when both he and John were launching their paths in entertainment. He recalled the excitement of those early days when everything seemed possible.
Beginning in 1975, John Belushi became a breakout comedy talent as one of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live. Alongside his friend and collaborator Dan Aykroyd, he created the beloved characters “Joliet” Jake Blues and Elwood Blues, giving birth to The Blues Brothers — a band blending blues and soul music with humor and energy.
The pair debuted their act as musical guests on SNL in April 1978. Later that year, joined by a full band, they opened for Steve Martin during his residency at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, marking one of the first major live triumphs for The Blues Brothers.
“John was my hero,” Jim recalled. “Those moments we shared at the start of it all still mean everything to me.”
John Belushi, remembered for his groundbreaking comedic presence on SNL and as part of The Blues Brothers, died in 1982 at the age of 33. His legacy continues to influence comedy and music decades later.
