Gators’ 7-foot-9 Rioux Makes Historic College Basketball Debut

Florida’s Olivier Rioux, standing 7-foot-9, made his much-anticipated debut against North Florida, setting a new record as the tallest player in college basketball history.

Historic Game Moment

In a game where the Gators secured a dominant 104-64 victory, the crowd of 10,065 erupted with chants of “Oli, Oli, Oli,” celebrating the fan-favorite who had yet to play since arriving in summer 2024. Coach Todd Golden brought Rioux onto the court with UF leading 102-61 and just over two minutes left in the game, thrilling fans at the O’Connell Center during the unveiling of the 2025 championship banner.

"It felt great," said the 19-year-old Canadian. "The support from everybody was amazing. Even on the bench and even with the fans. I’m very grateful."

Record-Breaking Height

Though Rioux did not score or record a rebound, his appearance marked a historic milestone as he became the tallest player ever to play in college basketball, surpassing Kenny George, who was 7-foot-7 and played at UNC Asheville from 2006 to 2008. Rioux also stands two inches taller than former NBA giants Manute Bol and Gheorghe Muresan.
