With Google's Stadia now part of gaming history, Sony continues to expand cloud gaming by enabling it on the PlayStation Portal handheld. This update represents a major step forward for portable gaming within the PlayStation ecosystem.
The PlayStation Portal, which works similarly to the Steam Deck, originally required a PlayStation 5 for streaming games. Now, owners can access cloud gaming directly without needing to connect to a console through Remote Play.
“Starting today, all PlayStation Portal owners will be able to use cloud gaming on the handheld.”
Through this feature, users can stream select digital PlayStation 5 titles from their personal library via Sony’s cloud infrastructure. Additionally, the PlayStation Plus catalog of streamable games becomes accessible directly on the device.
To access Sony’s cloud gaming service, players need an active PlayStation Plus Premium subscription, which costs around $18 per month. This subscription unlocks the full range of streamable PS5 titles and additional multiplayer benefits.
Sony strengthens its cloud strategy by making PlayStation Portal independent from the PS5, offering cloud streaming and new features for subscribers at $18 per month.
