Millions of Australians along the east coast are preparing for potentially severe storms and heavy rain this weekend, following an intense start to the storm season.
In Sydney, late afternoon and evening thunderstorms with strong winds may occur on both Friday and Saturday after warm daytime temperatures.
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Jonathon Howe explained that much of southeastern Australia will experience several unsettled days on Friday and Saturday due to a developing cold front.
“Today (Friday) we are looking at the possibility of thunderstorms all the way from southern Victoria across to South Australia and up into northern parts of NSW.”
Mr. Howe also warned that parts of northern Victoria and northwestern New South Wales may face damaging wind gusts on Friday afternoon.
Mr. Howe indicated that heavy rainfall, strong winds, and large hail may affect areas from Wollongong to Sydney, Newcastle, the Hunter Region, Mid North Coast, and interior parts of Queensland.
“For these areas, we could see damaging wind gusts with thunderstorms as we head into Saturday.”
This weekend marks a period of heightened caution as much of the eastern seaboard confronts the threat of intense weather disturbances.
