In his new memoir We Did OK, Kid, Anthony Hopkins expresses regret over a 2018 interview where he said he did not care about his estranged daughter Abigail's life. The 87-year-old Oscar-winning actor opens up about his sobriety, family, and career.
Hopkins acknowledges the coldness in his previous remarks toward Abigail, now 57, from his first marriage. He writes:
"It is true that I have spoken about her in the press coldly, saying in one regrettable interview that after 20 years of not hearing from her, I no longer knew where she was or if she’d ever married or had children, and that at that point I did not care."
He explains this coldness as a reflection of his own difficult upbringing:
"Though it’s no excuse, I know that was the coldness of my grandfather coming out: Move on! That hardness is my default."
Hopkins also denies tabloid rumors, writing:
"Some tabloids said I got her into drugs or rejected her as a child."
Despite their estrangement, he expresses hope for reconciliation:
"I hope Abigail knows that my door is always open to her. I want her to be well and happy."
Anthony Hopkins reflects candidly on his painful estrangement from his daughter, regrets his past cold comments, and expresses hope for healing and reunion.
