Lorenzo Musetti is just one victory away from securing a spot in this year’s ATP Finals after reaching the final in Athens on Friday. To qualify, he must win the tournament by defeating Novak Djokovic in the championship match on Saturday in the Greek capital.
Novak Djokovic was the first to reach the final, overcoming German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann 6-3, 6-4. Djokovic rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the second set, winning five of the last six games. This was a smoother victory compared to their last meeting in Shanghai, where Djokovic won in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
“The 24-time Grand Slam champion is now one win away from the 101st tour-level title of his career.”
He is among only three men in the Open Era to surpass 100 career titles, alongside Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103).
Musetti secured his spot in the final with a hard-fought 6-0, 5-7, 7-5 win over Sebastian Korda. Musetti initially dominated, leading by a set and a break at 6-0, 4-3. However, Korda fought back and even earned a match point while Musetti was serving at 4-5 in the third set. The Italian regrouped to clinch the victory.
“He originally led by a set and a break before the American clawed back and even held a match point.”
The showdown between Musetti and Djokovic will decide who takes the final spot in Turin for the ATP Finals this year.
