AZ suffered a 3-1 defeat against Premier League side Crystal Palace on Thursday in the UEFA Conference League. Despite the scoreline, luck prevented Palace from scoring even more at Selhorst Park.
Crystal Palace, who qualified by winning the English FA Cup, threatened early. In the 11th minute, a long ball was headed back into the box by Chris Richards and controlled by Ismaila Sarr, whose volley struck the post. Shortly after, the home side earned a penalty after a through ball from Yeremy Pino found Sarr via Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro.
Jean-Philippe Mateta, well-known for his penalty prowess, had his attempt saved by Owusu-Oduro.
Following the missed penalty, Palace intensified their attack, forcing multiple saves from AZ’s goalkeeper. Owusu-Oduro denied a strong header by Sarr, and Will Hughes’ volley clanged off the crossbar shortly thereafter.
The persistent pressure paid off when a long ball was nodded down by Sarr to center back Maxine Lacroix, who volleyed low and hard into the corner, scoring Palace’s opener. AZ finally threatened in the first half injury time when Sven Mijnans shot from outside the area, but Palace keeper Dean Henderson blocked it.
This save came just a minute before Palace doubled their lead.
