Fiorentina have dismissed head coach Stefano Pioli following one of the club’s poorest openings to a Serie A season. The decision was announced on Monday after a string of disappointing results left the team at the bottom of the table.
Under-20s coach Daniele Galloppa has been appointed as interim head coach and will oversee the team in the upcoming fixtures.
After ten league matches, Fiorentina remain without a victory, sitting on just four points. Their record stands at four draws and six losses—the third time in the club’s history they have suffered six defeats in their first ten Serie A games. The previous occasions were in 1939/40 and 2001/02.
The Viola have also lost four of their first five home games this season, a rare occurrence last seen in the 1977/78 campaign.
Pioli, who returned for his second spell at Fiorentina with a three-year contract in the summer, departs without recording a league win this season. His previous spell at the club ran from June 2017 to April 2019.
Throughout his managerial career in Serie A, Pioli has led several sides, including Bologna, Chievo, Inter, Lazio, Milan, and Parma. This marks the first time that one of his teams has gone winless in domestic league play during his tenure.
Galloppa will lead Fiorentina in their UEFA Conference League meeting against Mainz 05 on Thursday. Despite their Serie A woes, the Italian side currently tops its Conference League group after two matches.
