Several ticketing websites misleading visitors into believing they are buying official tickets for Shepler’s Ferry and Fort Mackinac will be taken down. The Texas-based company MTVRS, which operated these sites, agreed to remove them following an assurance of voluntary compliance with the Michigan Department of Attorney General.
The action follows a cease-and-desist notice issued by the Attorney General's office in September. MTVRS ran two websites that imitated official ticket vendors for Fort Mackinac and Shepler’s Ferry, causing confusion among consumers.
“Deceptive websites not only harm consumers but the legitimate businesses and agencies that preserve and promote our attractions,” said AG Dana Nessel. “My office will continue to pursue companies that mislead tourists to ensure Michiganders and visitors can trust the sites they use to plan their vacations.”
Both Fort Mackinac and Shepler’s Ferry authorities reported numerous cases where visitors appeared with only a confirmation email from MTVRS, which was invalid for entry onto the ferry or into the fort.
Mackinac Island attracts over one million visitors annually and remains a well-known tourist destination. The incident highlights the importance of protecting consumers and maintaining trust in official ticketing channels.
