Iconic Wolverhampton venue given new look and new life as owner looks to help make city destination hub

Iconic Wolverhampton Venue Reborn as The Apollo

The historic building on Skinner Street in Wolverhampton has begun a new chapter as The Apollo. Once known as the Diamond Banqueting Suite and earlier as the Astoria, the site has been completely transformed under the direction of nightlife entrepreneur Shaun Keasey.

Extensive Renovation and Investment

Since acquiring the property earlier this year, Keasey has overseen a thorough refurbishment. The work included full redecoration, the installation of an advanced sound and lighting system, new audio-visual technology, large projection screens, fresh carpeting, and modern furnishings. The total investment reached nearly a quarter of a million pounds.

A Venue with a Distinct Identity

“It’s the end of a journey for us in terms of hospitality as we’ve got the Gorgeous nightclub, Popzone, the George Wallis, and the Royal London — but they’re all pubs and clubs, whereas this is a proper huge events venue.”

Keasey emphasized how The Apollo differs from his other establishments. He described it as a large-scale events space designed for live entertainment rather than a traditional club or bar.

“In the past, when you went into the Diamond, it was very much a banqueting suite, brightly coloured and similar to Civic Hall or arena-style venues, while this is a darker, atmospheric place where you’d expect to see a major artist perform.”

Revitalizing the Local Nightlife Scene

The reopening of The Apollo marks not only the revival of a familiar landmark but also contributes to Wolverhampton’s goal of becoming a vibrant destination hub for nightlife and live entertainment.

Author’s summary: The Apollo’s major refurbishment restores a beloved Wolverhampton landmark, combining history with a modern atmosphere to boost the city’s growing nightlife scene.
