Letter: AG Moylan's Refusal to Help Feed Those in Need

The 38th Guam Legislature deserves praise for confronting the crisis caused by the suspension of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. As the saying goes, the Guam Legislature acts rightly only after exhausting all other options.

Governor Lou Leon Guerrero responded by allocating $13.1 million to partially fund SNAP through November. SNAP serves as a crucial lifeline for millions across the nation and thousands here in Guam. While primarily federally funded, states and territories may also contribute, but the program is established and governed by federal law.

During the current government shutdown, SNAP funding has stopped flowing, and the Trump administration is not providing support. The administration is seeking to cut health care subsidies under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which would throw millions off health care.

Trump wants to cut health care subsidies under the Affordable Care Act, throwing millions and millions off the ACA.

If Democrats accept these terms, the government might reopen and SNAP benefits would resume, but many could lose access to necessary health care. The Democrats have refused to choose between health care for the working poor or food.

The Democrats say “no” and will not do this. They will not consent to a choice between health care for the working poor or food.

This choice reflects a deeply immoral dilemma. Fortunately, the Guam Legislature and Governor did the right thing. However, the current attorney general has failed to take action to assist.

Sad to say though, the present attorney general has done nothing to help.

Author's summary: The Guam Legislature acted responsibly to support SNAP during federal funding cuts, while local leadership faces criticism for inaction amid a broader political standoff affecting essential benefits.
