Local boards across Auckland have officially started their new term after inaugurating members and electing chairpersons and deputy chairs for the next three years.
Local board members make decisions on services and facilities such as parks, libraries, and events. They also provide leadership to strengthen communities in the 21 local board areas throughout Auckland.
Their role differs from ward councillors, who serve on the council's Governing Body and represent 13 ward areas when making region-wide decisions.
This week, 16 out of 21 local boards have completed inaugurations and sworn in elected members for the new term.
Mayor Wayne Brown congratulated the local board members and emphasized the challenges ahead:
"This term we will work a bit more closely with our local board colleagues, with more regular get-togethers, and a look at how we structure and function our work."
He added, "Most local boards are larger than city or district councils elsewhere in New Zealand, with more people and bigger budgets. It's good the government are finally starting to recognise this."
Author's summary: Auckland's local boards have embarked on a new term, focusing on stronger collaboration and recognition of their significant community roles and budgets.
