Energy and marine consultancy ABL has been selected to support the upgrade of interconnectors in Greece, aimed at enhancing the energy resilience of the Ionian Islands.
ABL will provide marine warranty survey (MWS) services to support Hellenic Cables in installing submarine cables linking Kefalonia and Zakynthos, and Lefkada and Kefalonia. The total cable length is 38 kilometers.
The project involves upgrading the 150 kV interconnection between the Ionian Islands to improve energy security and reliability, with completion expected in 2026.
“We have in the past supported as marine warranty surveyor on several Greek interconnector projects. These are critical infrastructure assets to shore up reliable energy supply and energy resilience between Greece’s many islands. As Greece seeks to accelerate its net-zero goals, these new interconnectors will also be key in supporting the low-cost transmission of renewable energy to more consumers,” said Fabien Thomas, ABL’s Country Manager in France.
These upgrades will be instrumental in strengthening the energy framework across the Ionian Islands, facilitating renewable energy distribution and enhancing the islands' power reliability.
Author's summary: ABL will provide marine warranty support for a key submarine cable upgrade, boosting the Ionian Islands’ energy security and aiding Greece's transition to renewable energy by 2026.
