Ita, 83 years old, remains positive despite facing uncertain health challenges. After back surgery in 2021, she began showing symptoms that led to a diagnosis of isolated gait disorder. Now, Ita uses a wheelchair and depends on others for mobility.
“I haven't walked properly since the back surgery,”
“I'm dependent on other people to help me get around and that's one of the adjustments.”
Although doctors are unsure whether her surgery caused the condition or if it will worsen, Ita focuses on the positives, including relief from back pain.
“I can either feel sorry for myself and do nothing, or I can take control of my life, as I always have.”
She admits feeling frustrated by the limited funding for research on her illness but maintains her outlook that life is unpredictable.
“Life is full of detours.”
Recently, Ita completed her twelfth book, Unapologetically Ita, a memoir and the first she wrote without balancing a full-time job.
“It was a relief to write a book and discover how much fun it is when you don't have to keep leaving it to go back to the job you do.”
Ita’s approach is to remain active and positive despite the challenges her condition imposes.
Author’s summary: Ita embraces life’s changes with resilience, staying busy and positive despite her debilitating diagnosis and dependence on others for mobility.
