A former Boundary County jail employee faces aggravated battery charges after allegedly assaulting an inmate in January 2023. The charges were filed in September of the same year.
Bryan Brown, 37, has a preliminary hearing scheduled for November 17 at the Boundary County Courthouse. Two earlier hearings were canceled for unspecified reasons. Brown was released on a $50,000 bond and has not entered a plea.
The incident occurred following the arrest of an inmate wanted on a misdemeanor warrant from Kootenai County by the Bonners Ferry Police Department. According to a probable cause affidavit by Sheriff's Detective Brandon Blackmore, the inmate was intoxicated, verbally abusive, and uncooperative toward jail staff.
According to Blackmore’s testimony, after a heated verbal exchange, Brown shoved the man against a glass window inside his holding cell and punched him, causing the inmate’s head to hit a brick wall.
The inmate reportedly tried to grab Brown’s arms to stop the assault but did not otherwise resist. The affidavit further states that Brown grabbed the inmate’s throat with both hands and slammed his head into the brick wall.
The Herald does not disclose the names of victims involved in criminal cases.
