Jay Som is the creative project of musician, songwriter, and producer Melina Duterte. Her upcoming album Belong is set for release on November 7. Ahead of its debut, Jay Som unveiled the single “Past Lives,” featuring Hayley Williams of Paramore.
The two artists met in Nashville to work on the track with producer Steph Marziano. Williams’ delicate harmonies in “Past Lives” deepen its reflective atmosphere, evoking a sensation of faded motion and quiet introspection. The song’s restrained midsection delivers a powerful emotional punch, resembling a moment of internal conflict.
“It’s a dream come true to have Hayley sing on my first feature on an album before the recording of ‘Float.’ I still can’t believe it happened,” Duterte said. “She’s one of the kindest artists out there and she graciously uplifts everyone around her. We’re all lucky to witness her talent and share this timeline with her.”
Belong also features contributions from Joao Gonzalez (Soft Glas), Mal Hauser (Mk.gee, Illuminati Hotties), Steph Marziano (Vundabar, Hot Wax, Sir Chloe), and Kyle Pulley. For the first time, Duterte welcomed guest vocalists onto her record.
Author’s summary: Jay Som’s Belong merges introspection with collaboration, and “Past Lives” captures emotional depth through the synergy of Melina Duterte and Hayley Williams.
