Sam Smith spoke openly about being bullied at school because of their weight, an ordeal that led them to undergo liposuction at just 13 years old.
Discussing their childhood on the Podcrushed podcast, Smith revealed how weight-related teasing profoundly affected them. The singer explained,
“My weight as a kid was the hardest thing for me in school, and weirdly the thing I probably got teased the most about.”
Smith detailed the impact on daily life and their decision to have surgery:
“I had surgery on my chest when I was 13 years old because I had a growing chest. There was all sorts of reasons why, but mainly that I was just getting so teased. I couldn’t go swimming in school, and getting changed in the locker room was hell. So I got liposuction when I was 13 years old.”
Host Penn Badgley asked about Smith’s parents’ reaction to the early surgery. Smith responded,
“They were supportive.”
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes fat through suction to reshape specific body areas.
Smith, now 33, reflected on the emotionally challenging experience that shaped their youth and perspective.
