Two red cards for Dan Hall and Logan Rogerson left Auckland FC fighting to defend their lead. Despite being reduced to nine players, the Black Knights held off Wellington Phoenix to secure a 2–1 victory in their Kiwi derby at Wellington.
Auckland striker Sam Cosgrove opened the scoring within the opening seconds, but the Phoenix equalized soon after through Ifeanyi Eze. Cosgrove restored Auckland's advantage before halftime. However, the visitors were forced to reorganize defensively when Dan Hall was sent off and coach Steve Corica opted to reinforce the backline.
Logan Rogerson was dismissed with ten minutes left, and forward Jake Brimmer left the pitch after suffering a dislocated shoulder. Referee Ben Abraham oversaw the turbulent match packed with drama and determination.
