I reviewed Leeds-based band Nervous Twitch’s fourth album Some People Never Change in 2022, so it was a pleasant surprise when singer Erin asked if I wanted to review their newest release — the aptly titled The Day Job Gets in The Way.
On first listen, it’s clear that Nervous Twitch haven’t lost their talent for turning everyday frustrations into joyful rebellion. Where their previous album had a “less-angry riot grrrl” vibe, this one feels looser and more playful but remains just as punchy.
If I were to make a comparison, it would be to The Slits: quirky, rough-edged punk with a strong DIY spirit. Yet, the band has developed a sound uniquely their own — scrappy yet melodic, raw but immediately catchy.
The production has a charmingly raw, almost vinyl-like quality, reminiscent of a gem found in a second-hand record shop that you instantly love. Erin’s vocals sit sweetly above jagged guitars and a driving rhythm section, giving even sharper lyrics an unexpected warmth.
Don’t be fooled by that sweetness, though.
This album showcases Nervous Twitch’s evolution while retaining their distinctive punk energy and heartfelt expression.
