Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Jon Cooper responded firmly after the team's 3-2 defeat to Nathan MacKinnon's Colorado Avalanche in the 2025-26 NHL season.
The Lightning started strong in the first period but lost momentum, allowing the Avalanche to come back and secure the win on the road. Before this game, Tampa Bay had a five-game winning streak, which was snapped by Colorado's victory in Denver.
“It was good for a bit, and then we got in our own way. And when we get in our own way, it’s usually going to be tough for us,” Cooper said, as reported by NHL.com.
“It was unfortunate that there were untimely penalties. We took those tonight, but they were a better team for periods two and three. So, that was a little disappointing.”
Despite the setback, the loss to a top-ranked Avalanche team should not dampen Tampa Bay's season outlook.
Jon Cooper insists the Lightning must avoid self-sabotage after their first loss since late October, urging focus to maintain competitiveness in a tough division.
