It Took T.J. Watt Nine Years To Meet A Pittsburgh Steelers Legend

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ strong defensive effort against the Indianapolis Colts made Dick LeBeau proud. This game also marked the first meeting between T.J. Watt and LeBeau.

LeBeau returned to Pittsburgh as part of the 20th anniversary celebration of the 2005 Super Bowl XL winning team, which gave the two a chance to finally meet.

Took nine years, but I’m glad,” Watt said in a weekly interview with WMBS’ George Von Benko. “He’s obviously a busy guy, but meeting the legend himself was very surreal.

LeBeau was among several Steelers honored at halftime during Week 10’s game. Other notable attendees included quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, running back Jerome Bettis, and defensive lineman Aaron Smith.

As coach and player, LeBeau and Watt never overlapped in Pittsburgh. LeBeau’s last season with the Steelers was in 2014, while Watt entered the NFL in 2017. In 2014, LeBeau served as the Tennessee Titans’ defensive coordinator. That year, Pittsburgh defeated Tennessee 40-17, with Watt recording two tackles, but the two did not connect after the game.

“Anytime those guys come back, it’s awesome,” Watt said. “To be recognized for their Super Bowl is awesome. To see all those guys back in town and how close-knit they are is special.”

Watt’s meeting with LeBeau highlights the respect and connection between Steelers generations.

Author’s summary: T.J. Watt finally met Steelers legend Dick LeBeau after nine years, celebrating the team's rich history and strong bonds among players past and present.
