A 47-year-old woman from Havant, Juliette Spencer-Besant, expressed “disbelief” after winning £250,000 in the People’s Postcode Lottery. She had intended to cancel her direct debit but forgot, leading to her postcode, PO9 2LD, being drawn as the weekly Millionaire Street prize.
The postcode covers a nine-storey block of flats in Leigh Park, so three ticket holders each received a quarter of a million pounds. Juliette called this win “the luckiest thing that’s ever happened to me.”
Juliette was surprised when Postcode Lottery ambassador Judie McCourt appeared at her door with the cheque. She said:
“There was disbelief when I saw the cheque and then a wave of emotion came over me. But I managed to pull it together.”
She explained her forgetfulness:
“I was going to cancel a couple of months back, but I’m really bad at personal stuff. I was going through direct debits and bits and pieces. Promotion came up at work and I’ve been working for that for the last two months and never got round to it.”
Juliette added:
“I did get round to cancelling some subscriptions, but with life and everything else taking over I didn’t get round to cancelling the Postcode Lottery. It’s probably the luckiest thing that’s ever happened to me. I’ll keep playing now.”
She plans to invest her winnings wisely, but first intends to treat herself.
Author’s summary: Juliette’s unexpected lottery win shows how sometimes luck comes when least expected, turning oversight into a life-changing moment.
