Corey O’Connor, a Democrat and son of former Pittsburgh mayor Bob O’Connor, secured victory in the mayoral race, becoming the city’s 62nd mayor. He previously served on the City Council for ten years and later as Allegheny County Controller.
O’Connor defeated Republican Tony Moreno, a retired city police officer who also ran for mayor in 2021. Pittsburgh has not had a Republican mayor since O’Connor’s grandfather’s generation. Earlier this year, O’Connor won the Democratic primary by defeating incumbent Mayor Ed Gainey.
The Associated Press declared O’Connor the winner at 8:26 p.m. Supporters at his election-night party, held at the IBEW Local #5 hall on the South Side, applauded when the victory was announced over the public-address system:
“We have a special announcement. Corey O'Connor has won.”
Addressing the crowd shortly after, O’Connor expressed gratitude and reflected on his family’s legacy:
“I’m humbled and honored by the great honor and privilege of serving as Pittsburgh’s next mayor.”
“I’m sure Mom and Dad are happy somewhere tonight.”
He also mentioned the difficulty of following in his father’s footsteps, saying, “It's hard for me to talk about [following his father into office] tonight.”
Corey O’Connor won the Pittsburgh mayoral race, continuing a family legacy and earning strong support from the community, as he prepares to lead the city as its next mayor.
