Staten Island’s Hidden Garden

A Senior’s Labor of Love Brightens Canterbury House

The grounds surrounding Canterbury House in Rosebank have become noticeably greener thanks to resident Bill O’Connor. Throughout the year, he has dedicated himself to weeding, mulching, and planting various flora.

O’Connor’s Gardening Journey

Bill O’Connor’s passion for gardening began in childhood in the South Bronx, where he cared for a lone sumac weed growing in a junkyard. Now 84, he views gardening as therapeutic, helping him cope with the health challenges of aging.

Origin of the Garden Project

His gardening venture started in 2012, after moving into Canterbury House—a senior housing facility run by St. John’s Episcopal Church—following Hurricane Sandy. O'Connor recalls:

“I really lucked out with the garden because I missed my garden, so I asked the priest of St. John’s Episcopal Church at the time if I could start one. He said, ‘Bill, you can do it, but you’ve got to make it look nice because this is the first thing you see when you come up to the building.’”

By 2014, O’Connor had transformed a barren patch of rocks into the vibrant garden it is today.

Personal Dedication and Support

This garden serves as a peaceful place for residents to gather and enjoy nature.

“This is the first thing you see when you come up to the building.”

Author’s summary: Bill O’Connor’s passion-driven efforts have transformed Canterbury House’s exterior into a lush garden, offering solace and community for senior residents.
