Mark Parton, the new Canberra Liberals Leader, alongside his deputy Deborah Morris, expressed a strong commitment to guiding a unified party toward the 2028 election.
“I’m absolutely sick to death of having conversations about internal party matters because I can tell you that people out in the suburbs are not having those conversations.”
Parton emphasized the importance of moving beyond internal conflicts and uniting the party members. He stated that he and Morris aim to align nine parliamentary members to work together effectively against the government in 2028.
Parton acknowledged past divisions within the party but credited former leaders Leanne Castley and Jeremy Hanson for stepping down, which created an opportunity for unified leadership.
“I think in recent months my party’s been divided by a line that separates people who hang on to shit and people who leave shit behind, and it is time to leave shit behind.”
He viewed the division not as ideological but as a choice between holding onto past conflicts or moving forward.
Known as the party’s best media performer, Parton has long been seen as a potential leader but previously lacked sufficient support or chose not to pursue the role until now.
