Verizon is offering free phones to low-income families as part of the company's affordable internet initiative.
The program, called "Lifeline," provides eligible families with a free phone and up to 3GB of free data per month.
To be eligible, families must meet certain income requirements and reside in a participating state.
"Our goal is to make it easier for low-income families to access the internet and stay connected with their loved ones," said a Verizon spokesperson.
The program is available in 35 states and the District of Columbia, with more states expected to participate in the coming months.
Eligible families can sign up for the program by visiting the Verizon website and providing required documentation, such as proof of income and residency.
Resale of the free phone is not allowed, and Verizon may terminate service if the phone is not used for its intended purpose.
Families who are already enrolled in the Lifeline program can continue to receive their free phone and data, but must re-certify their eligibility annually.
This initiative by Verizon is a step in the right direction towards bridging the digital divide and ensuring that all individuals have access to the internet, regardless of their income level.
