Bandersnatch is out now on Netflix.
As a Black Mirror fan, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the sheer audacity of Bandersnatch. The way it breaks the fourth wall, the way it makes you feel responsible for the choices the main character makes, the way it subverts the traditional episode format of the series, it's all so mind-blowing.
I had the chance to speak with the cast and creators of the episode, and I'm still trying to process everything they told me. But I'll do my best to share some of the highlights with you.
I started by speaking with Charlie Heaton, the actor who plays Colin Ritman, the main character of the episode. He's known for his roles in The New Mutants and Stranger Things, and he brings a lot of depth and nuance to the character of Colin.
"I think what drew me to the project was the idea of a choose-your-own-adventure style episode," Heaton said. "I'd never done anything like that before, and I was excited to see how it would all come together."
"Colin is a bit of a complex character," Heaton continued. "He's a bit of a troublemaker, but he's also got a lot of heart. I think that's what makes him so relatable."
I also spoke with Joe Gilgun, who plays the role of Stefan Butler, the writer of the interactive book that serves as the central plot device of the episode. Gilgun is known for his roles in This Is England and Preacher, and he brings a lot of energy and charisma to the role of Stefan.
"I think what I love about Stefan is that he's a bit of a dreamer," Gilgun said. "He's a writer, and he's always looking for new ways to tell stories. I think that's something that a lot of people can relate to."
"I also love that Stefan is a bit of a troublemaker," Gilgun continued. "He's always pushing the boundaries and taking risks. I think that's what makes him so interesting."
I also had the chance to speak with Sean Walsh, the director of the episode. Walsh is known for his work on The End of the F***ing World and Peaky Blinders, and he brings a lot of experience and expertise to the role of director.
"I think what I love about Bandersnatch is that it's a real game-changer," Walsh said. "It's a whole new way of telling stories, and it's something that I think a lot of people are going to be talking about for a long time."
"I also love that it's a bit of a risk," Walsh continued. "It's a big experiment, and it's not something that a lot of people would have the guts to try. But I think that's what makes it so exciting."
As I spoke with the cast and creators of Bandersnatch, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder. It's a truly innovative and groundbreaking episode, and I think it's something that a lot of people are going to be talking about for a long time.
But what I think really sets Bandersnatch apart is the way it makes you feel responsible for the choices the main character makes. It's not just a matter of clicking through and seeing what happens - it's a real investment in the story, and it's something that I think a lot of people are going to be thinking about long after they finish watching the episode.
"I think what's so clever about Bandersnatch is that it makes you feel like you're in control," Walsh said. "But at the same time, it's also making you feel like you're not in control. It's a real paradox, and I think that's what makes it so fascinating."
"I also love that it's a bit of a commentary on our society," Gilgun added. "It's a commentary on the way we consume media, and the way we make choices. I think that's something that a lot of people are going to be thinking about."
As I finished up my conversation with the cast and creators of Bandersnatch, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. It's a truly innovative and groundbreaking episode, and I think it's something that a lot of people are going to be talking about for a long time.
"I think what I'm most proud of is the way it's been received," Heaton said. "I think people have been really receptive to the idea of an interactive episode, and I think that's something that's going to be really exciting to see in the future."
"I also love that it's a bit of a challenge," Walsh added. "It's a challenge to the way we think about storytelling, and it's a challenge to the way we consume media. I think that's something that a lot of people are going to be thinking about."
Overall, I think Bandersnatch is a truly innovative and groundbreaking episode. It's a commentary on our society, a commentary on the way we consume media, and a commentary on the way we make choices. It's a real game-changer, and I think it's something that a lot of people are going to be talking about for a long time.
"I think what I'd say to anyone who's thinking about watching Bandersnatch is to just go for it," Heaton said. "It's a wild ride, and it's something that's going to be really exciting to see. So just click through, and see what happens."
