Dragon Quest Dev Was Worried About Releasing Recent Remakes Out Of Order

Producer's Concerns

Square Enix recently released HD-2D remakes of the first three Dragon Quest titles, known as the Erdrick Trilogy, but in an unconventional order. Producer Masaaki Hayasaka expressed worry about launching Dragon Quest 3 first, ahead of Dragon Quest 1 & 2. He feared the earlier games might appear inferior due to Dragon Quest 3's advanced gameplay features.

“When I first heard ‘Let’s release Dragon Quest 3 first for the HD-2D versions’ from Mr. Horii, I was honestly worried. Dragon Quest 3 is the last game of the Erdrick Trilogy after all, and the original Dragon Quest 3 had a lot of elements to it to begin with. If we were to release Dragon Quest 1 and 2 later on, how much would we have to expand on them to not have them seem inferior to Dragon Quest 3?”

Development Insights

Hayasaka brainstormed enhancements for Dragon Quest 1 & 2 to match Dragon Quest 3, discussing ideas extensively with series creator Yuji Horii. Development on the projects overlapped, enabling shared mechanics that enriched both remakes. This parallel work proved challenging yet rewarding.

Author's summary: Producer Masaaki Hayasaka worried releasing Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D remake first might make later Dragon Quest 1 & 2 versions seem inferior, prompting intense enhancements and talks with Yuji Horii for quality parity. (148 characters)
