FMCSA Extends Medical Certification Waiver

A dozen states are still not compliant with new federal medical certification regulations. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has extended a waiver to help states maintain compliance.

The new guidelines, outlined in the Medical Examiner's Certification Integration rule, require medical examiners to electronically submit results from physicals to FMCSA and state licensing agencies within 24 hours of the exam. The rule also eliminates the need for drivers to carry a paper copy of their medical certification card.

These 12 states had not implemented the new regulations by July. Author summary: FMCSA helps non-compliant states.
