Accidental Shooting in Hamlin, Maine
A 31-year-old woman from Brewer, Amber Oaks, is recovering after being accidentally shot in the knee during a bird hunting trip in Hamlin, Maine.
Oaks was a passenger in a side-by-side vehicle driven by 31-year-old Danielle Fernald of Freeport, as part of a party of six people.
- The group was traveling in two ATVs and two side-by-sides.
- The leader of the party spotted a bird and attempted to shoot it, prompting Fernald to exit the vehicle and retrieve her loaded shotgun.
- As Fernald grabbed the shotgun, she accidentally bumped the butt against the vehicle's roll cage, causing her hand to hit the trigger.
- Birdshot struck Oaks in the knee, resulting in her being taken to Cary Medical Center in Caribou for surgery to clean the wound.
According to the Maine Warden Service, Oaks is receiving treatment for her injury.
