Communion: A Life-Saving Balm for Mental Illness
In the church, we do not live or die on our individual faith alone. We are united with one another, in Christ, and we can cling to one another's faith in the darkest of moments when our own faith fails.
The author recounts their experience in an in-patient locked psychiatric unit, where they were overwhelmed by the suffering of others. Conversations about mental health are common, but the experience of serious mental illness, including psychosis and life-threatening impulsivity, was new to them.
My heart was filled with compassion and pity for the men and women on the unit for whom every single day was a fight to stay alive.
The author was not there as a healthcare provider or minister, but as a patient, suffering more than they ever thought possible.
