Mosquito-borne Chikungunya Virus Confirmed in NY
State health officials have confirmed the first locally acquired case of Chikungunya disease in New York.
A person on Long Island has been infected with the virus, which is commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions and is rarely fatal.
Symptoms of Chikungunya
- Fever
- Joint pain and swelling
- Headaches
- Muscle pain
- Rashes
The virus is transmitted by the Aedes albopictus mosquito, which is present in parts of downstate New York.
According to the state health department, the virus does not spread from person to person.
The case was confirmed through lab testing in Nassau County, but officials are still investigating the exact location of the infection.
