What cherished campus coyote’s death tells us about his life

Kip the Coyote: A Life and Death on Campus

Kip, a coyote with a distinctive limp, became an unofficial mascot at the University of British Columbia's Vancouver campus.

He was often seen sleeping, basking in the sun, and hunting squirrels, with his casual, limping strolls across campus becoming legendary.

His limp was a result of being hit by a car sometime after his birth in early 2020.

Kip's life was cut short when he was struck and killed by a car near the Botanical Garden in October 2024.

Despite the tragic circumstances of his death, it provided a unique opportunity for UBC researchers to learn more about his life.

Research Opportunity

Iris Li, a third-year PhD candidate, performed a necropsy on Kip at the Beaty Biodiversity Museum, focusing on the ecology and physiology of urban coyotes.

Author's summary: Kip's life and death offer insights into urban coyote ecology.
