Lawmakers push DoorDash, Uber Eats delivery tax statewide for Chicago transit

Lawmakers Consider Statewide Delivery Tax for Chicago Transit

Illinois lawmakers are considering a statewide delivery tax on services like DoorDash and Uber Eats to fund Chicago's transit system.

The tax would affect all Illinois residents who shop online, regardless of whether they use the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Metra, or Pace.

Illinois House Speaker Chris Welch says a controversial charge on DoorDash and Uber Eats deliveries could still be used to help fund Chicago’s mass transit system.

The Regional Transportation Authority (RTA), which oversees CTA, Metra, and Pace, is facing a significant financial shortfall: $230 million in 2025, $790 million in 2027, and nearly $890 million by 2028.
