October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Two events in Rochester this week aimed to combat the issue.
Angels of Mercy held an awareness walk on Thursday. The organization is collecting donations of bedding, towels, clothing, and other essentials at its Butterfly Boutique on North Winton Road to help women in need.
"So many of them, when they're starting over, they don't have those items," said Angels of Mercy founder Mary Jo Colligan. "Here at the boutique ... they receive everything free of charge."
Despite a decrease in crime overall in Rochester, domestic violence "continues to demand our urgent and unwavering attention," according to a statement from Mayor Malik Evans.
