A large stretch of coastal freeway will be closed due to a Marine Corps live-fire event at Camp Pendleton.
The event, part of the Marine Corps' 250th birthday celebration, will involve firing artillery over the I-5 Freeway.
“Due to an event at Camp Pendleton today, October 18th, Interstate 5 will be closed from Harbor Drive to Basilone Road between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm.”
The closure, which will be in effect from Harbor Drive in Oceanside to Basilone Road near San Onofre, was announced by the California Highway Patrol, citing "extreme life safety risk and distraction to drivers, including sudden unexpected and loud explosions."
This closure comes only three days after the Marine Corps stated that no freeway closure would be necessary.
