Drought conditions in Hawaii have extended to normally rainy Hilo, with the entire state experiencing dry conditions.
According to the National Weather Service, even Hilo, a city known for its heavy rainfall, is in severe drought. Hilo International Airport received only 2.76 inches of rain in September, which is 32% of its normal total for the month.
For the year, the Hilo airport's rain gauge has recorded 38.17 inches through September, just 46% of its norm. This is not the first time Hilo has experienced drought conditions, as it also occurred in January 2023, September-October 2022, and November 2020.
"If it happens, it seems to be an autumn thing, which would make sense as that is at the end of the dry season for that area,"
said Stall. The drought conditions are a concern for the state, and it will be important to monitor the situation closely.
