Nebraska's Startup Community Faces Uncertainty
Nebraska's startup community has been worried about the future of the Business Innovation Act after funding cuts were targeted in the last legislative session.
The Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED) has stopped funding for three key programs:
- The prototype grant
- The Small Business Innovation Research and Tech Transfer (SBIR/STTR) program
- The academic research and development grants
DED is not awarding any Business Innovation Act grant funding at this time.
An email from DED stated:
It appears unlikely that DED will be able to make additional awards during the current fiscal year, without providing a clear explanation.
Ecosystem leaders warn that if the funding stop isn't reversed, Nebraska innovation will suffer.
