Construction Begins on Passenger Shelters for Northlander Rail Return

Northern Ontario is one step closer to seeing the revival of its iconic passenger rail service, with work underway on modern shelters along the route.

In Temiskaming Shores, a new passenger shelter is being built at the former site of the Ontario Northland station off Jaffray Street. This shelter will be one of nine along the route, including ones in Temagami, Matheson, Swastika, South River, Huntsville, Bracebridge, Gravenhurst, and Washago.

The shelters will provide passengers with a "safe, accessible space to wait for the train,"

according to Ontario Northland Transportation Commission (ONTC) officials. The shelters will be equipped with amenities such as ample lighting, real-time train arrival updates, CCTV security cameras, and Wi-Fi access, offering a consistent, modern experience for passengers.
