Employment Relations Bill consultation

Employment Relations Bill Consultation

According to the proposed law, employers can be fined for failing to justify summary dismissal or for not preventing workplace sexual harassment.

A worker can be sexually harassed by another worker, a customer, or any other person, and the employer will be held liable if they fail to take adequate measures to prevent it.

Passing the Employment Relations Bill in its current form is going to be disastrous as it does not consider economic realities of the country and over-regulation will cripple the MSMEs which employs 80 percent of our workforce.

Labasa Chamber of Commerce President Vinesh Dayal expressed concerns during a public consultation, stating that criminalising administrative mistakes sends the wrong message to investors and business owners.

Author's summary: Proposed law may cripple businesses.
