Before a building is even occupied, it accumulates a significant carbon debt. The World Green Building Council reports that building materials and construction contribute 11% of global carbon emissions.
Some regions are experimenting with multistory timber buildings, but they are unlikely to replace skyscrapers soon. However, Strong by Form, a Chilean startup, believes wood can still play a role.
“We’re more into hybrid buildings,”
said Andrés Mitnik, co-founder and CEO of Strong by Form. The company has developed an engineered wood product to replace concrete and steel in structural floors, enabling architects to design lighter, less carbon-intensive buildings.
