British racing driver Graham Capel was inspired by the success of the Ferrari 250 Breadvan and decided to build his own version based on the Lotus Eleven design by Colin Chapman and Frank Costin.
The Lotus Eleven had already achieved impressive records, including a 143mph top speed with Stirling Moss at Monza in 1956 and a seventh-place finish at Le Mans in the same year, followed by class wins at Le Mans and Sebring.
The solution was simple: Capel would build his own Breadvan, based on Colin Chapman and Frank Costin’s Lotus Eleven design.
At the 2025 Goodwood Revival, Capel shared the story of his iconic Breadvan, and driver William Nuthall prepared to race it in the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy.
Author's summary: Britain's Lotus Breadvan rivaled Ferrari's legend.
